Subject: advice on gym

Hi everyone

Bit of a strange question but before I was dx with ra, I joined a gym, thing is since then I havent been able to use it & cancelled my direct debit, not realising I had to pay for 3 years whether I used it or not.

It is a small gym which has mainly weights, it has a running machine & rowing machine but I feel that it would wipe me out, especially as the mtx is making me feel so tired.

I have been told I can get out of the contract with a medical certificate to say that Im unable to use the gym, i dont want to pay £400 for something I probably wont use again.

Do you think my rheumy nurse would help me with this or the consultant?

Not only am I feeling rough most of the time but now have a huge debt hanging over my head.

Any advice would be great, thanks x

Your probably better asking the nurse rather than the consultant some charge for things like that. Probably best to ask the gym first as they may not accept this anyway. Three years seems an awfully long time most gyms say 3. Months

My Gym say a letter from my GP will suffice, that shouldn't be a problem to get?

The gym will accept a letter, I spoke to them today, will ring back to see exactly who from though.

Not sure if gp/hospital will try to encourage me to go though but I really dont feel like I could, consultant has told me to try & look after myself, not to put any undue pressure on my joints so surely that will be enough.

Thanks for replies x

Maybe go for a gym that has water aerobics or sign up at a swimming pool. You could just gentle movements - the water would stop you jarring your joints. If the hospital strongly encourages you to do exercise, see if they have a hydrotherapy pool - these are extra bouyant - due to the salt content. Excellent. I highly recommend them.

Good hint Gaynor ,,

Karen, the other thing you may want to look at is yoga or thai chi ,, something that is going to strengthen your core but not put your joints under stress.

Thanks for all your advice, totally agree with the swimming Gaynor, lets hope I can get out of my gym membership so I can afford to sign up somewhere else that is going to help me get a bit fitter!

Will look into the yoga etc also, thanks Maz

Hey Karen - another thought. Under the disability discrimination act, service providers are supposed to cater for people with disabilities. Point that out to them and ask to withdraw from your gym membership on grounds that you cannot safely use the equipment at the gym. Good luck.
