Subject: Palindromic Arthritis
I was told last week I have Palindromic arthritis and given painkiller (tramadol) for pain. Tramadol is making me sick. Does anybody here have any experience with this type of arthritis? Thanks.

Hi Olwen, I have Palindromic Arthritis (also known as Palindromic Syndrome, Palindromic Rheumatoid Arthritis, Palindromic Rheumatism) & Tramadol doesn't do the job for me at all. The rheumies I see all agree that the pain of PRA is far more intense than the pain of severe RA; they also say that in most cases pain meds just don't seem to work for PRA. In the past I have even used morphine tablets & they didn't work for the pain. The hospital pharmacist suggested to take one tramadol & one panadol (paracetemol) together -- apparently it works better than just tramadol on it's own. You haven't said if you have inflammation when you are flaring ?? if you do you need to get the inflammation down because that contributes to the pain. ie using Voltaren, Celebrex or similar plus pain killers ,, If I can be of any other help just ask. Maz ps - Ice used to be my best friend rather than heat!!

forgot to tell you : There are a couple of websites around that have people with PRA .. one is the IPRS the other is The Roadback website. PRA is a rare disease so there isn't too many of us that actually have it. The most information about PRA I have found is on the IPRS site. www.palindromicrheumatism.org/index.shtml www.roadback.org/forum/

Thank you so much, you are so kind to reply. You certainly told me more than the doctor. I will try Panadol with Tramadol. I have the inflamtion when it is at its worst; cannot use Voltaren I have an alergy to it. Celebrex may be OK. I must find another doctor. This one just said there is no cure and gave me Tramadol for pain. It is hard to look for doctor when you feel this bad.

You are welcome, having PRA is the pits & I can still remember those excruciating 3 days my flares used to last, I used to go from zero pain to about 9-1/2 in around 5 min then it would just stay there until it decided to pass. I suggest you research yourself as much as you can about all available treatment paths before you decide to try any. Remember there is no cure but we can manage it really well. It would be so much easier if I could email you with the info I have but other than putting it up on this website I have no idea how to give you my email address, but ask away if you need any more info. I started the treatment path I chose in Jun 08 & other than a couple of little hiccups last year have been pretty much pain free for over a year now. (I need to say though I don't consider a little ache when I wake up to be pain, that could just be my weary bones...lol)
