Subject: Pain in feet

Hi I have had arthiritis for about 18 months and the biggest problem I have is pain in the balls of my feet. I am on Methotrexate but it has not helped Just wondered if anyone else has the same problem and if you have found anything that helps like good insoles etc. Thanks

Hi Janet, Ask your rheumatologist to refer you to orthotics. I had some insoles made to my exact feet - these could be put in any shoe. I also recommend crocs - they are the only reason I can work as they are comfy and allow your feet to swell etc. Like walking on fluffy clouds! They look funny but once you've had them on for an hour or so they kinda mold and are a lifesaver. Alternately orthotics can provide shoes with support, and ankle supports/splints. Lots of options for you to try. Good luck! x

They will feel cold and weird to start with, but just wear with socks and give them a go. Sports soccer usually have them reduced. I love that I can wear them with my splints as well. x

I can only wear skater type shoes because they are so padded. When my oldest daughter got married last June I bought some Hotters and couldn't wait to get them off my feet were so painful after wearing them I couldn't go to her night time reception.

Thanks all for your advice, I have had some benefit from FitFlops but they are very expensive and I was hoping for some tips that maybe were a little bit cheaper and also had worked for others. I would recommend to other's that they try FitFlops though.

I wear Flyflots, expensive but good. Mine have jel soles that mould to the shape of my feet. I have lots of 'normal' shoes, most high heels and I do hate the fact that I can no longer wear them. I am still praying for a miracle and that one day I will be able to (well I can dream can't I?)

I have had some inserts made, was refereed to the orthotics dept. (hope I've spelt that right) by my specialist nurse. I was told that the reason I was having problems was because due to RA I had become very flat footed and pressure was being put the wrong part of my foot when I walked. I do think you should mention about your feet at your next hospital appointment. You only get one pair of feet and they have to last you a lifetime.
