Subject: does amytriptylene help
I am currently on Methotrexate, Diclofenac, Co-codamol and prednisone and my consultant says he might put me on Amytriptylene. I am desperate eneough to try anything as I am feeling dreadful at the moment but would be nice to hear if it has helped anyone else?

I take 50mg a night, well not currently as i need to listen to the new arrival. Its an anti-depressant but has anti-inflammatory properties and it really knocks you out, so sleep is a lot better. This was the reason i was given it as i had not slept properly due to the pain for 6 months, took a 50mg tablet and was gone for 20 hours. It also stops me from dreaming which is strange. I do find it makes me drowsy really drowsy in the morning, so be careful driving or anything like that.

Yes... Yes..... and YES. They have stopped my severe neck pain dead. And like Paul said they help you sleep. One of the drawbacks is a dry mouth but that far outweighes the pain and insomnia.

you'll find sleep again with these tablets as long as the dose is decent i.e. 50mg :)

Hi AJ, I have PA and am also on mtx, amitriptylene and arcoxia. I have only been on mtx for 6 weeks but amitriptylene for about 2years. It must be the strength that helps with the sleep because I am on 20mg at night and don't find it helps me sleep. It helps a lot with my back pain and I was on a higher dose which did make me sleepy all day and reducing the dose did still help with the pain relief so I went with that. You will be able to talk it all over with your consultant. Good luck.
