Subject: sero-negative arthritis with infection

I was diagnosed with sero-negative arthritis with infection about three and a half years ago. It started with pain in my shoulder and then a lump appeared on my collar bone. I was in pain for 8 months and after repeated visits to my Doctors and becoming so ill with the infection was eventually hospitalised by a Rheumatologist. A biopsy showed the lump was my infected collar bone. I now have arthritis in both shoulders, am on Methotrexate and Prednisalone. I am now being told to come off the steroids and the pain is again increasing. I am finding it very difficult to be positive as my shoulders, neck and arms mean I can do less and less for myself. I am very lucky that my husband and family are so supportive but I hate being so dependant on everyone. Is there anyone out there who has had a similar experience or can give me some hope for a better future.

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with your arthritis. I have sero-negative arthritis myself and have been through various flare-ups which have been so bad I've been in hospital. I have now been lucky enough to go on the new anti-TNF drugs (Humira) and I am feeling so much better (I've even been able to return to work). I think the trick with arthritis is to find the right medication for you. There are so many treatment options and some work for some people and others work for other people. Keep on at your health care team if you are not feeling like your arthritis is under control and hopefully you will end up on something that really works for you.

The good thing is sero-negative arthritis is usually not so damaging to the joints as sero-positive arthritis and in the 27 years I have had this condition I haven't yet had any surgery.

I hope you find relief soon...
