Subject: Got DLA Indefinately

Update. Got my DLA decision letter today and I've been awarded it indefnately. It may help to know what my circumstances are [ may help others ? ] I started about 3 years ago to get pain in my left ankle and I noticed a large bump near it. Also had pains in my hips as well, specially my left. Went to see an Orthopedic Surgeon who told me it was a bone spur probably due to an undiagnosed fracture years ago when I fell. Was told I could have the spur shaved or my ankle could be fused so he put me on the operation list. However not long after I started to get swellings and heat in my knuckles and my left leg was ' wasted ' compared to my right leg.So to cut a long story short I was sent to the Rheumatology dept and after 18 months of seeing them was told I had RA. The Orthopedic surgeon said he wouldn't operate because of the diagnosis.

How this affects me is : I have to walk with a stick and have to wear an ankle brace . I walk very slowly and with pain.

DLA history - applied about 3 years ago and was refused. I went to a decision panel and again refused. I left it 3 months then went to the Citizens Advice Bureau who filled my form out and was granted DLA mobility only as I don't need anyone to ' care ' for me I just have difficulty and pain walking. This would have stopped in January next year so I had to apply again for that. I got a phone call last Friday asking me if I was due to have an op and what meds were I on. Told them the surgeon won't now operate because of Inflammatory Arthritis and was now on Plaquenil which is a DMARD.

Hope this info will help other peeps

n.b. Apparently we can also get free disability car tax ? Never knew that before - do others get this ?

Great news KayJay . I was awarded mine indefinately but stopped after 15 yrs. You take your excemption cert and renewal tax form to tax office. You dont pay tax or insurance if motability. If its your own vehicle do same procedure. Good Luck

I've just started the process and have an appointment with my GP next week. Was diagnosed with RA nearly 2 years ago, meds still not sorted, on everything going it seems - have so many tablets in the morning I don't need breakfast - ring any bells!!!
Anyway - my doctor knows all about my RA and my depression and is going to work with me to build a 'clinical plan' to get me out of this bad place and into a state where life seems normal. Do you think he will therefore be supportive of my claim? I am scared that I don't 'deserve' the benefit, that I don't look 'disabled' and that I'm trying to pull a fast one. Do you feel like this sometimes?

Go for it Scary. You are entitled to apply for it.
Handy tip, get the CAB or another advice agency to help you with the forms, they know how to turn what you say into a reasonable statement.

It's a plus if you get the GP to work with you as the Citizens Advice Bureau lady told me that a GP's letter is worth a lot more compared to scans/Xrays etc because they know your problems a lot better. I'm a bit different to you [ I presume ] I actually hobble with a stick and walk very slowly BUT that does not mean to say that I am in more pain than others , it;s just that my ankle won't bend because of a large bone spur. So go for it - you won't know unless you try. And yes ofcourse you deserve it if you fulfill their criteria. Good Luck ;0)
