Subject: Weight gain and MTX

Hi

I have RA, diagnosed in July 2010. I am currently on 7.5mg of MTX and was on steroids which I stopped two months ago. I seem to have put on 11lbs the past couple of months and have been eating and exercising the same. I wonder if this is also a side effect from MTX. I actually should be loosing weight as I am not drinking as much alcohol!
Anybody had experience of weight gain on MTX?

Thanks

Rach

At last some one else with weight gain.
I started mtx one and a half years ago,I put on half a stone, then stopped and lost the lot within 3 weeks.
I went on it again after 6 months and wham the weight has returned plus a bit more.
I was told that its not the mtx itself but the medication increases your appetite, so you eat more hence the weight gain.
I dont drink and decided to go on a strict diet 6 weeks ago, and to date I have not lost one ounce and feel really pissed off.(excuse the french)
I take 15 mg mtx per week.
It seems to be around the midrift mostly to.

Hi Guys I think I know what you mean put 1 stone on in 4 months, when I take the mtx I used to get a sickly feeling, If I nibbled on something it used to help, and make me feel better I have also noticed my appetite has increased doctor said it was all the medication I also take 15mg mtx.

Its interesting seeing how it effects differant people!

I find I lost weight on it but put on with the steroids. Does anyone know if weight gain is one of the known side effects?

Thanks Sarah. Maybe it will even out when I am on the MTX a bit longer. They have just put my dose up again so fingers crossed I don't put on any more!

Hi Angela

Yeh me too, it seems to be around the midrift I am putting it on. I did weightwatchers for a month and actually put on 4LBs so I am with you - very pissed off!

I asked my Rhuemy today (as he has put my dose up to 10mg) and he said it is not a known side effect but maybe it will even out once I have been on it for a while (I am on it 3 months), here's hoping!!

Thanks for your reply

Hi Sally

I asked the Rheumy today and he said that MTX does not have a side effect of weight gain and it might all settle down once its in my system for longer as any medication you are on affects the body in different ways.

Yeh cheers, tell that to my clothes which I am bursting out of!

Fingers crossed it all settles down.

Hi Charlotte

Maybe its the after effects of the steroids although I have been off them 2 months. Fingers crossed it all settles down!

Thanks for your post.

i have been on methyltrexate for about a year.I gained 25lbs,and my hair is thinning, especially on top. dr. says weight gain is not a side effect of MTX. I disagree. tried everything, cannot loose the weight not even one pound. the MTX is helping my RA, so i'll stick with it, just hope my hair stops falling out and i do not gain any more weight, i'm very bloated alsol.
