Subject: Been more or less symptom free but.......................

Hi

Sorry, its a long one!

Since my bad reaction to sulfasalazine, I had a throat infection & was taking anti biotics, had my mtx to start when id finished anti biotics but didnt start it as I was (more or less) symptom free for 2-3 weeks & felt wonderful, no tiredness, felt like my normal self!

Its been great, even doubted I had ra, that maybe an infection had caused my inflammation, was waiting to see the nurse until I started it again but now :-( Im sure i can feel the old stiffness coming back in my knees!

Its been 4 weeks since I had my steroid jab, so if this is it wearing off, then my thoughts were wrong, that its back to square one.

I have a feeling my nurse is not going to be happy that I didnt start the mtx but I wanted to give my body a chance, to see what would happen

Another thing is, I really dont want to take mtx at all, as I still want to be able to enjoy a drink when I go out & at the weekend at the family dinner we have, she didnt seem impressed when I told her this before but surely its my choice!

Im so confused, Ive been so happy, feeling good & able to take my son swimming, which I couldnt have done before....I dont want to feel like I did before.........

karen could you ask if there are other meds you could try instead of MTX ? because surely if it's not suiting you then they will have to try another. Should it be a Nurse who decides which meds ? After all it's your body - not theirs.

Hi Karen, I made a decision myself to stop the Mtx and not go back on it as was so ill with a chest infection I didn't think I would get better. Luckily, they all agreed with me and I've had a few weeks with only steroids but am starting to get really bad again. Need to put my steroids up but am reluctant and am seeing my rheumy on Wed anyway.

The thing is to make informed decisions. Waiting for doctors to get back to me etc. (although mine are pretty good on the whole) and then the wait for appointments means I'm not really covered medication wise. I can hardly at the moment, never mind do anything else so am having a very frustrating time of it. I know exactly how you feel. It's tough and I empathise with you. Hang on in there and get a proper explanation of things so that you can make the decision that suits you. Oh and btw, I was allowed 6 units a week on mtx. Not a huge amount but it did mean I could have wine with dinner or save them up for a party.
xx

Well my doc told me as long as i stuck within the recommended units for women, i would be fine. I am unashamed to say i drink this most weekends, most weeks. I wont let RA and MTX (am on 17.5mg)ruin my social life. Although i must say, i seem to be rather lucky, as i dont get any side effects on MTX considering what i have read on this forum of other peoples experiences, but then again, it doesnt seem to be working for me full stop!
