Hi Caroline I have RA and AS and as far as i am aware RA affects everything apart from your elbows. Don't think your faking it. I often get back pain, lower and upper.

caroline the Amytriptyline should improve your back ache if it does the same for you as it did for my neck pain it was like a miracle cure !! Watch out for a dry mouth though I drink gallons of Tea now but at least the neck pain has gone and the bl***y migraines and vomiting that used to follow the neck pain.

Back pain has so many causes. It could be specific (directly related to RA or similar) but majority of people suffer non specific back pain. You may have RA and it may be the cause but you could have non specific back pain. To treat it you first need to identify, as best you can, the cause. See a good physio. Don't let people fob you off and blame a specific condition without good reason! It may be treatable?

I have RA......sometimes I have to go to see my osteopath to have my spine clicked back in (cue the cringes!!). He says its because my hips get out of alignment and one leg gets slightly longer than the other which then causes the pain - could be RA related or not - Does it matter what causes it IT BLO**Y HURTS!!! If you think about it though, you are probably walking a bit funny and sitting a bit wonky because you are in pain.........which could be affecting your back......whatever it is I think I know how much its hurting you and you must NOT start thinking you are a hypocondriac - I've been down that road and its is a dark and horrible place full of guilt and other nasty feelings....If you can afford it (about £30-£40 for a consultation) go to see a qualified osteopath.xxxx

Cathy - I'm confused.com!! My RA causes my major issues in my elbows and the muscles around them - where did you read that there is anywhere in the body not affected by RA??? My consultant and Rheumy Nurse link every single thing wrong with me back to my condition in one way, shape or form.........there appears to be so many other conditions too that are common in RA suffers - the latest one I've been told I have is something that causes pains in the rib cage and breast bones and I've been worrying unnecessarily about DVT when the pain in my calf muscle is also linked to the RA........!!! This damn disease sure has a lot to answer for!!!

Yes Scaryfeet I have that pain in the ribs and my GP said it was the arther !! A bit scary because it hurts near my heart and I keep thinking it's that. I also saw a Chiroprator years ago with the same as you lots of clicking and rather unusual positions to be in and he told me I had 1 leg shorter as well. I get it in my elbows specially my right one is permanently swollen.

Hi KayJay
Each time I've been my husband Steve has been there which I've been pleased about as some of the positions I've been put in......! The first time I went the guy asked me to put my leg in the funniest place and I said 'you are putting me in a position reserved for my husband I'll have you know!!!" It helped to cover my embarrassment!!!

Its cheered me up thinking about it!!
