Subject: Methotrexate & alcohol

Hi

I have been given Methotrexate to take as I had a reaction to the sulfasalazine.

The question is, how many units do you drink?

The rheumy said up to 7 a week, the leaflet I was given says 2-3 per day.

I know a binge at the weekend is worse but what about special occasions, eg birthdays & Christmas, will it harm me if I go above these guidelines on occasions?

What do you all do?

Karen x

Hi Karen I do still have a drink 2or3 glasses of wine at the weekend or 2or3 vodka and tonics, I have been having weekly bloods done and my liver enzymes are slightly raised.... So thats my drinking stopped for a while. Everyone is different my brother in law doesnt have any problems at all,I think a lot of it depends on the individual and how much other meds you take.

Hello Karen,
I take 22.5mg. of methotrexate each week and have been on methotrexate for many years.I usually have one very small glass of wine at lunchtime every day except for the day when I actually take the methotrexate. Even at celebrations I wouldn't go 'overboard' -maybe a couple of glasses of wine/champagne. Some consultants would say 'no alcohol' -others 'in moderation'. My blood results have never shown any liver damage.
I expect you will find a wide variety of opinions on this topic!

Hi Tom, how was the holiday? did you have a good time... As regards to the raised liver enzymes.. Tom I am sorry I dont know GP said it was slightly raised but never gave, and I never asked about numbers he said it was the mtx as I have been having probs with it. But I do still drink a bottle of wine through the week.t.c.

Hi Lynn, the holiday was great thanks and my body behaved quite well apart from knee problems, but overall i was happy. Drank quite alot and liver enzyme results went up to 260 rec. is 20-50 i think. not drunk since and down to 86.
The results went up due to sulphasalazine reaction, not because I'm some sort of raving alcoholic btw!!!

waiting for it to drop below 50 now and finally onto MTX then fingers crossed...
