My jaw has totally locked up today and I can barely open my mouth to eat or take my tablets and chewing anything is painful.
Anyone any suggestions?

Hi I am new to the forum, I have just had the same thing and the only way to relieve it was Bonjela. May sound stupid but it helped, hope it helps you.

Thanks for the tips, I'm glad to say its eased now and just clicks a bit now and then. I gather its common with RA but is definately the jaw joints either side of my face rather than a tooth thing.

Hi shirley, I find a little bit of heat helps to ease the stiffness, and a little bit of gentle massage, hope that helps. Take Care.x

I have been getting it quite badly recently, very painful to eat and I have PA. I'm hoping the MTX will sort it out

I gather this is fairly common with ra as it attacks the jaw joint same as any other. My sister took me out for lunch yesterday and I ordered a toasted sandwich. Imagine my embarassment when it arrived with freshly cut thick sliced bread. My big sister had to cut it into quarters for me and I had to leave my crusts lol!!

I didn't know you could have an injection in your jaw!! Trouble is I'm getting confused now about these steroids as I've so many different places that hurt I woulnd't know where to start. Is there a limit to how many injections in different places you can have and are there any adverse effects?

hi there,

i have suffered this a long time now and gotten increasingly worse over the years and may have to have an operation on both sides of my jaw in order for me to open it enough to eat as to much damage has been done to the joints!

the only thing that helped me before it got this bad was slowley chewing gum a while before eating to loosen it up a bit and taking strong pain killers before meals.

with regards to the joint injections, i have had 9 in total in my wrists, knees, ankles and elbows! i dont think there is a limit to how many you can have? and the worst side effect i have had from them would be the ache directly after the injection and that i didnt notice any benefit when my left elbow and wrist where injected.

hope this helps in some way or another! and hope your jaw gets better! i know how annoying and frustrating having a painful and stiff jaw can be!
