Subject: Hi to you all

I have been diagosed with Rheumatoid & Ostieo-artritis and also gout.
Over the last 18mths I have just come to except that the pain I experience during the day as to be accepted, but It is becoming increasingly difflicult to sleep at night because whichever side I sleep on I get pain in my knee's, Hips, Spine and Shoulders.

To control my pain I am currently on Fentanyl patch's 100mg, Tramador x 400mg daily and amitripyline, but am still in a great deal of pain when walking and at rest???
My Rheumatologist as referred me to a Orthapeadic Surgeon to see if he can help??

My biggest problem is that 17years ago I had a kidney transplant, so most drugs used to control arthritis I am unable to take as my bodies immune system is already reduced due to drugs to stop me rejecting my Kidney???

Is surgery my only option???,
I have already lost 31/2 stone in weight to try and take as much stress off my joints, but am feeling increasingly unwell the more weight I lose

Hello Steve, welcome to the forum. Sounds as if you are in an unenviable situation. I don't know about drugs but I wonder whether an Occupational Therapist might be able to help you with some advice/equipment to help you at night - or have you got a special bed, etc. already? Have you tried body bolsters and the like? You might get some help from the council to buy something like an electric bed or loaned it. I don't know exactly what is on the market and might be talking rubbish here but it is all I can think of. Might be worth a phone call to Adult Services at the council to see what they can offer.

Surgery doesn't sound like a bad option for your osteo problems, though it will be tough you will see definite relief from pain. My mum had shoulder and knees replaced and although they weren't great mechanically for her (she was unlucky with two of them but also had problems losing weight because of her mobility)the ops reduced the pain considerably.
