Subject: Turned down for DLA

Hi, I've just been to docs and after 9 weeks on MTX my inflammation levels have gone up again. He's gonna speak to Rheumy and see if I can increase the dose and signed me off for another 4 weeks. I'd already reduced my hours to a job share so now I'm on half pay of half pay (ie quarter of a full time salary and this runs out soon) and I've been turned down for DLA Ggrrrr.. How do they expect you to pay all the bills on £79pw sick pay????
Sorry to moan but feeling really fed up and in pain. Thanks for listening. x

Appeal Shirley. Go to CAB or other voluntary organisation and they will help you.

Thanks Sally, the doc was quite supportive and said most people get turned down first time! Tryin to get through to our CAB is a mission tho and they queue outside all down the road on the open days, I couldn't even stand for that long!! Can't believe they expect you to deal with all this when you're ill and alone.... so much for protecting the vulnerable!

Shirley, you should have a welfare rights office near you, They are fab people and can fill your appeal form in for you. Ask at your local job centre it was them that told me about the welfare rights, they will fight your corner for you.

i am possibly too late in replying to this letter. my husband was turned down for dla, and we were advised to get a social worker to help fill in the forms on his behalf, we did and we got the lower level, then later we re-applied and got the higher level. it seemed that the answer for us was to get a social worker to help, and sign the forms, we did have to go through a medical assesment as well.

Thanks Margaret, glad you got yours sorted but it makes me cross that we have all this extra stress and have to get experts in to fill in forms for us. I spoke to them on the phone and told them my inflammation levels had gone back up even tho I'm in my 10th week of Mtx. Also that I disagreed with the points made in their decision letter so they're going to re-consider!! This could take another 6 weeks and I don't know if will get me anywhere but its probably all gonna change again soon with the gov review anyway! I wonder if this is why they seem to be just turning everyone down regardless??

hello shirley, possibly you are right with regards to the government, and their problem with numbers, and figures!! for myself i have just applied for attendance allowance, because of the worsening of oesto arthritis, and got the lower level. my doctor said they send applications back to the gp, for referall, and he would see it was my application, and allow it through.i was wondering if 'dla applications' also go back to the doctor for his or her to report on. good luck for a future application, i believe you are allowed to appeal. if so you need to get a 'professional' to sign the application. even ask yuor doctor if he / she will counter sign the application for you, to add mor weight to the claim

i agree with you fiona, too many people try to rook the systemn which is why people who really need help dont get it. perhaps it should be that a medical doctors certificate is enclosed with each assesment. plus a full medication list. m. edwards.

Sorry you got turned down too Jake. My bro-in-law has written a strong letter and they're re-considering my case but I'm not allowed to call again until after 11 WEEKS if I've not heard anything!! This benefits system is just crazy cos without DLA I can't claim Working tax credit either if I do manage to go back to work on reduced hours. Its all or nothing it seems with no support if you try your best and do what you can! Grr

I don't think it is about people getting DLA who aren't entitled to it that is messing it up for everyone else. It is the government saving money. That's all. They've said it very clearly. After all, if people with real problems can't get it, how can the fakers?

Sorry Bell, but there's been quite a few stories highlighted in the press and on tv recently about people who have been claiming it for years even though they're ok now, which must have prompted a clamp down I think. Surely trying to keep my job part-time with a bit of support is better than giving up and living totally off benefits but the system doesn't support this until you've been off sick at least 28 weeks? How many employers are gonna keep your job open that long? Its all or nothing!
