Subject: yttrium synovectomy for psoriatic arthritis

Hi Guys

I am a 31 year old male and was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis of the knees about 5 years ago and now after a lot of pain have opted to have an yttrium synovectomy procedure and go into hospital in a few weeks. Has anyone had this procedure done? and if so how successful was it and any probelms etc. I cant seem to find out much about it.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Sally

Yes I have googled it but there is not much about it online, I dont think it is widely practised because of the cost. I spoke to the doctor this morning and he said he performs about 5 synovectomy procedures a month and apparently has a fairly good success rate. It is done on the nhs which is a bonus.

I get measured for splints in a couple of weeks and then go in to hospital for 3 days in mid october. The procedure consists of an injection into both knees (radiation based) and then they put the splints on to stop the radiation leaking and then bed rest for 56 hours.

I'll let you know how it goes

cheers

mark

Well, good luck.I hope it does the trick for you. You could try posting on the Arthritis Care forum - there is a link on the links page of this site. You might find someone there who has had it.

Had mine dome today . All went ok , some excess fluid drawn off , the yttrium solution injected followed by a steroid to minimize swelling and soreness , bandage wrapped tight then a 6 point leg brace tight over the top to help eliminate movement and put back in bed . Now some 5 hours later knew not to bad ,brace uncomfortable but doing its job

Last 3 days since discharged - severe pain after moving around , only stairs for toilet and bed , had the wife and kids for meals and drinks . I know that there may be sunshine after the rain , but at present I've got thunder clouds

Feel like I've hijacked Marks thread my apologies . Serious pain subsided 12 days after injection . Still painfull but a lot milder , rested all this time . The notes from the hospital say improvement is unlikely within 14 days and may be a month to feel the benefit and that a temporary increase in synovitis can occur following treatment . Am hoping to scan the information the hospital gave me and upload it as a .pdf so there something better out on the internet than there is already .

Hey Rob, how you feeling now? does the pain subside after a while? Iv just had my MRI scan with the aim of getting this treatment done in the near future and was wondering if you were able to scan the info you got from the hospital so as to give a better idea of what will be happening? Hope it has worked for you :D

Apologies for the length but its been a while
Sorry to be away so long but have had issues with phone - lost the forum link and couldn't find my way back plus other personal things , sorry again.
Never got round to upping the info but will look back into it , however the pain continued to increase to the point I moved up to tramadol back to specialist and placed on sulfasalazine but he can't understand / explain why the extra pain he saying the yttrium not known to cause increased pain , nearly 3 months later and a further increase in pain (to the point I am ready to put an axe in my leg) and another visit to specialist have just started Butrans patches , anti-depressants and referral to the pain clinic but still no explanation or investigation and he still insists the yttrium not to blame ,

Steven if you get offered any other treatment than this I would take it . I know my personal bad experience may not recur with others but would give it serious consideration . Hope all goes well which ever way you decide to go
