Subject: reducing steroids and in pain.

Hi hope every1 is feeling ok.
i've been on prednisolone for about 3 months and been reducing the dose from 20 to 10 mgs. i should be reducing down to 5 but i have stopped at 10 mgs daily because i'm in so much pain. i am swelling up everywhere and got new symptoms of muscle ache. i also have a pain in my back just below my shoulder blade when i breath in, not sure if its my lungs or muscle to.
i will be seeing my rheumy on the 21st sep and hoping they can give me other medication but because i want to have a baby in the next year not sure what they can give me.

just wondering if anyone else has had this with reducing there meds and does anyone know what meds i could be put on that won't harm a baby when i'm ready to conceive.

thanks in advance.

Hi Davina! so sorry to hear you are struggling! I too have had problems reducing pred. I was on 30mg for 3months and was dropping by 5mg but after was in a bad way. I was then put back on 20mg for 1month, then down to 15mg for 2wks then 10mg for 2wks then 9mg 1wk, 8mg 1wk. 7mg 1wk, 6mg 1wk and so on. This was better. Unfortunately steroids aren't the answer you really need something else. I also got muscle pain on reduction. Go well XXX

hi abbie thanks for the info, maybe i'll try and get my rheumy to let me reduce the same way, as i can't deal with droping so quickly and from the dose.

hope you are well

hi Davina, I agree with everything Abbie says. I'm on long term steroids too and it isn't great to be on them all this time. I think you should see your GP about the pain when you breathe in. That does not sound right to me :)

ive been on high dose steroids for about 6 weeks now, and i cant get passed 25mg which is a new thing for me. past couple of days im having a major flare up involving 7 joints so back on the 40mg! unfortunately i have a pre-employment medical today so i doubt they'll give me the job as im hobbling :-( My condition is very mismanaged and my consultant wont see me (he's the only one who can change my meds), instead he rang my GP and told him i dont take my drugs! Lies!

Hi Davina - I don't think you're moaning at all, I'm 31 and feel so old. What condition do you have? I have Ankylosing Spondilitis, I get severe muscle pain at the top of my thighs when I try to walk when I'm reducing my steriods x

too young! i was 12 when i was diagnosed. i was also admitted to hospital this morning. i couldnt walk this morning, and still had 7 swollen joints. so had IV steroids today, not noticed any change yet but they said it would take 2 days. my consultant still refused to see me, but he did turn up, and we had a row in the ward. but at least he's changing my meds now :-)
