Subject: Knee Hip Arthritis

Hi everybody, just found this site, and would firstly like to say hello, and hope that everybody is well.
I have been suffering from arthritis in the bottom of my back, hip, and knee for around nearly 5 years now,and find it very painful. The pain is so worse with the different weather conditions, winter being the worst, cold damp winters. If the weather is crisp and dry, with blue skies, those are my better days.Summer well, humid weather seems to affect my arthritis, also and not for the good, does anybody else have this problem?.I had a heart attack nearly 5 years ago,so i cannot take inflammatory drugs, can anybody recommend anything else?Your advice would truly be appreciated :)

derry ask to be referred to a Rheumatologist and/or an Orthopedic Consultant. They will do Xrays , blood tests and scans to see what exactly is the problem. Good Luck ;0)

Hi Derry, I am the same with inflammatory drugs cant take them as I also had a heart attack 5 yrs ago. I agree with Kayjay you need to see a rheummy and find out what arthritis it is so they can treat it with the right meds. I have cortisone/steroid injections for inflammation and take coedine phosphate and parasetamol to help with the pain. Take Care.

Thank you so much for your comments..I went to the doctor yesterday regarding my hip, knee, and lower back.I asked for an XRay for my lower back and right hip,as i had one a few years ago for my lower back, which came back that i had two worn dics at the bottom of my spine, but since then things have progressed with my hip and back, also my knee.My doctor told me that she did not think that the pain was coming from my back, but just from my hip "HuH"I know that its also coming from my back,as at times it locks, and can be very painful. My pain, as i said does also depend on the weather conditions. So to cut a long story short,my doctor has given me a form for an XRay for just my hip, dont know why she did not let me have my back Xrayed also :( She did say that i should lose some weight, which is so hard as i have a thyroid problem, which is just being treated now thankfully.I am on Thyroxine,my doctor has put the dose up,so i am hoping it will help with the weight issue.I am not obese, but the doctor says my weight is enough to affect my pain.I am getting the feeling that she wont send me anywhere else until i lose some weight, but i eat very healthy, and control portions size,i dont eat chocs, cakes, crisps, dont even like them.I have always ate healthy, but i used to smoke, which was the reason for my Heart Attack :(..Lyn B..Sorry to hear about your Heart Attack, hope that everything is ok with you now,so far i have had no probs,so fingers crossed for us both :) Thanks KayJay for your reply also.Would love to see a Rheumatologist, but the doctor just says,oh its Arthritis Grrr.

derry that's why you need to be referred to Rheumatologist because they specialise in ALL types of Arthritis. Not all types of Arthritis show up on XRays sometimes they have to do scans as well. As an NHS patient you can insist for a referral to a Rheumatologist. If your GP is not being co operative give your local PALS office a ring for their advise.

Derry you have to push your gp for a referral to a rheumatologist, Like kayjay says you need to know what type of arthritis you have, so you can get the right medication. And thank you for your concern Derry it is much appreciated. Cant say I was as good as you, I used to smoke too and I realy do miss It. especialy if I am having a drink. Please take care and let us know how you get on.:)

Hi derry, the others are right you need a referral. Sometimes writing a letter to your gp saying what you want and why helps. Did it myself a few years ago when the GP was refusing to refer me for a couple of things. He was furious as I made him write back to me but he did it. If it is in writing they feel more culpable so put her on the spot. She won't like you for it but you are not there to be liked, just to be treated.
