Subject: Anyone been given Gabapentin for pain relief?

Went to doctors yesterday as im having a flare up and no pain killers ive got are even comming close to even taking the edge off the pain. (im on neproxin, tramadol and paracetamol).
I went last week to ask for something differant and was given codein! So really thought id get the help i needed.
Hes given me this drug ive never heard of and you have to build it up, so for 3 nights u take one before bed, then on the 4th day you take one before bed and one in the morning for the next 3 days and so on! I means id be taking them constantly, i really dont think i should b taking them as im not in constant pain, its just when im flareing up that i need something more than my usual pain relife!

Advice would b great on this please as im compleatly fed up!

I've had them for headache and found them very good. It is best to take them continually because then you will keep it in your system for when your in pain. The pain will prob be less frequent this way too. If you have breakthrough pain ie pain You get on top then take something else eg I have take 12hr slow release morphine 9am and 9pm which theoretically should be enough but If I get breakthrough pain, I take liquid morphine on top up to every 4hrs. I hope this has been helpful and made sense. Go well X

Hi Kirstine..
Sorry to hear you are so fed up, I can totally identify with you on this, I started my pain management this way. Abbie gave you good advice re to take them continually instead of just when the pain comes as it helps to control it. I hated having to take something like that as It made me so tired. As for gabapentin; I take it 3 times a day now for pain, it is a stronger antinflammitory (not sure if its spelt right lol),especially legs and night time. It does help me.

I hope things get better for you hun, its never nice all this carry on but everyone here will help lots :) Nicky x

Yeah would agree with Abbie and Nicky. I know a nurse who told me that we must take painkillers all the time to get better pain control. She said to imagine a graph and extreme highs and lows - that's when we take the painkillers when needed. But if we take them all the time the " graph " will stay on a steady level therefore managing the pain better. [ Unless, of course ] the GP has specifically told us to take only when needed.
