Subject: Red wine and stress!!
My hubby been away this week and I had an awful week with stresses I really did not need or want. Because of this I drank red wine (alli had in). My hands and feet have flared up again and I am convinced it's due to these. I won't drink red wine again but unfortunaty cannot get this woman causing me stress to leave me alone. Aaahhh!! Hope you all having a good stress free day!!

My mother used to say that red wine aggravated her arthritis. She had OA. Doesn't seem to affect me with inflammatory type.
Hope you manage to reduce the stress as that can aggravate things as well.

Had a couple of glasses with steak last night and actually not too bad this morning - must be more stress I think. I am praying this person has finally got the message to leave me alone cos she is totally stressing me out now!!
Dont need stresses do we??

Mine flares up with stress, my god does it.. my work is very stressful.
Dont drink wine or booze anymore but i did hear red wine can cause flare ups. You're not supposed to drink alcohol on most arthritis medications ;-)

stress does flare mine up to!!!! and as for red wine my hubby read it was good for arthritis so i had it with a nice dinner and that night i was crying with the pain he felt really bad for suggesting it so i dont drink any alcohol at all :-)

Hi Paul, I'm allowed 6 units a week on mtx though I know different hospital have different recommendations.

6 units a week, what dosage are you on? MTX leaflets all say no alcohol and so do my Doctors and nurses, i was told off as i had a few swiftys on a surfing trip recently and my liver function test was sky high compared to normal.

Hi Paul, am on 10 mg weekly. My hospital takes the view that it is better to allow a small amount of alcohol than ban it altogether and they are doing regular blood tests in any case. I know several people on the same regime as me who are allowed to drink.

lucky you, but bear in mind the damage alcohol and mtx mixed do to your liver, its a lot worse than alcohol on its own. my blood nurse almost ripped my head of "nicely" when she saw my liver function results and that was only after a few pints. LOL

Oh dear - sound scary - I am still waiting for a confirmed diagnosis of PA. I am not currently taking anything. Doc said to carry on anti-inflammatories but they hurting stomach. Been meaning to go to docs but been on wheat/dairy free diet and feel tons better. Pain only slight at the moment aswell. Dreading going on tablets. Had an extremely stressfull day today and finger hurting more tonight.

hi Paul, am well aware of possible damage to liver. Luckily for me I am quite a light weight so mostly don't drink very much. Just nice to have the occasional glass of wine. Also, not allowed alcohol on day of taking mtx or day after, apparently offers some protection. I have got high liver readings but had them before I took mtx and they have improved since!! Christine, are you taking a stomach protector such as omeprazole? If not, ask for one. I did gluten free diet but no help for me.

Hi Sally I have Lanzoprazol which I am allowed to take with them but I was talking on another post about a massive fear of taking tablets and having side effects. So currently taking nothing - I do not seem to be in as much pain as you all on here. Gonna wait for a confirmed diagnosis then go from there.

hi Christine, be careful - I have heard that some people on diets and apparently symptomless have gone on to have damage to the joints. My rheumy nurse told me this and have heard from others too. Not trying to scare you but just to pass on information. Perhaps you should check it out with your doctors....? No sense in suffering pain - I tried to do without painkillers but not any more.

Aw thanks for that - I know. I keep thinking that one day it is suddenly gonna go a lot worse - should be back to hospital for results in next 6 weeks. Will see what bloods and xrays say.
Paranoid about taking tablets - silly fear of mine. May have to just get over it.

I can understand the paranoia. Is it just about taking drugs generally or about swallowing pills cos you could always have injections!!

No it's side effects. I had some blockages in my jugular veins a few years back which had disappeared by time I had my angiogram. Even prof did not know what they were. Then under anasthetic for an op I was given Augmentin and my blood pressure dropped very low for a few seconds. So they both freaked me out and I have got to stage where I just can't bring myself to take them. Also have indigestion which I now belive to be from wheat intollerance So that also worries me what effect tablets will have on stomach. Crazy I know but feeling tons better on wheat/gluten and dairy free diet. X

Hey Sally - my consultant agrees and says if we took all the advice we were given about not drinking, not doing this, not doing the other there would be no point taking the meds as we would not have a life anyway and might as well live our lives locked in a box room with nothing else. I really think moderation is the key. I dont have problem with a glass of wine but have found just a larger shandy causes me to flare. So I stick to wine now but guess we are all different! Hope u are feeling better now!

Hi K, Glad someone agrees with me :) I saw my rheumy this week and he says it is all about balance and more similar things to yours. I told him I would go insane if I sat about waiting for the drugs to work! You have to get on with things and find out what works for you. The steroids are working a bit but still got problems with knees and ankles but hope to get pain free soon.

My first time here today. I have had OA for a few yrs now, had 4 injections, sub talor fusion Consultant says nothing else he can do,On lots of Painkillers, Have allergys with painkillers as well, But have to say the best Pain killer, stress killer and Sleeping pill has to be Sourthen Comfort, Just can't get it on the NHS...
