Subject: 20 month old Toddler on Prednisolone & Methotrexate

My daughter Meg has just been diagnosed with Systemic onset Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Does anyone have any knowledge on how oral pred, methyl pred pulses and methotrexate affect your child. Any tips on hospital visits?

I have Psoriatic Arthropathy and am currently on a flare for which I am oral pred 20mg (same dose as my daughter) and methotrexate too, so I do have first hand knowledge of how this affects you, but having more knowledge to help Meg would be good.

Good grief ,, what a shame.

I agree with Verity, look at her diet & cut out all gluten, dairy, preservatives & watch for hidden gluten.

Good luck with her,

ps : I think if it was my child I would be seriously looking into AP therapy rather than the heavy meds, she is so young.

I started with JIA when I was about 6. They always told me it would go and that Id grow out of it but Im 24 now and have RA. When I was younger I found acid free diets really helped : ) Unfortunately you cant really cut out milk from a child so young can you??

You could feed her goats milk or soya though couldn't you?
I have no idea about the meds with the little ones but I am sure there is something if you go back to previous posts there have had a few people on here who have taken it from being very young.
Poor poor little mite it breaks my heart when I hear about all the children that suffer with this cruel buzzard of a disease.
I truly hope you can find a suitable management programme and she doesnt have to take the meds.

HI Alec, that must be a bit of a blow. My gp told me that she has quite a lot of kids on Mtx and they 'do very well.' Obviously with a child you have to be very careful with diet and shouldn't do anything without input from a dietician.
