Subject: Methotrexate

Hi just found this site today, i have suffered with RA from been in my teens, after having my children i was doing pretty well with just occasional flare ups but over the last 12 months things have got bad my ESP level rising and joints very swollen and painful, i have been taking methotrexate for about a month now only 15mg on a tues and one folic acid on a thur, i have already seen an improvement with my joints, i do feel a bit washed out for a couple of days but nothing major, my only worry is since taking metrex i have been really spotty and also i have not had my period since been on it, i have taken 2 pregnancy tests which were negative, but today been thursday i've been feeling tired and a bit sicky, i'm sure its only the meth but with not having had a period i'm a little worried, has anyone else had this problem ???

hi Adele, welcome to this forum! Like you I am on Mtx but lower dose of 7.5mg. I have problems with spots and my gp has given me an antibiotic cream which works well. I sometimes feel nauseous but not for very long and tired at times. I don't know about mtx skewing pregnancy results - not heard it before but your specialist nurse might know.

Sorry Adele, I've just hit the mp so can't help you with that one. Have you got a specialist nurse? S/he should be able to help answer that question.

I've been on MTX for 2.5 years. Istarted at 15 mg, got down too 7.5mg, weaned off it, got a wicked flare up 6 weeks later and now I just started last night with the 25 mg dose.
Horrible.

My periods have been a little out of whack as well, but I seem to get it every 23-25 days instead of my usual 28-30 days.

Thanks for your reply Romy, i'm just really worried as i have not had a period at all since the beginning of april, i started on mtx 5 weeks ago,the first 4 weeks i was on 7.5 and then i saw rheumy nurse on tuesday and she said to do a pregnancy test and if it was negative then to double my dose of mtx to 15mg which i did, but i'm now worried cos i still not got my period and don't want to take my next lot of mtx on tuesday if there is any chance i am pregnant, but also don't want to keep spending money on pregnancy tests for nothing, and now its bank holiday so its going to be tuesday (which is my mtx day) before i can get to see doctor of rhuemy nurse,me and my hubby are both 37 our youngest is 14 and my oldest is 18 in a couple of weeks, i never thought i'd be starting again, oh dear dilema.

Hi Adele, I have been advised on occasions that it is ok to delay taking Mtx by day or two and have actually skipped it for the odd week when I have been unwell. Maybe you can call rhuemy nurse Tues morning and take Mtx in the evening after you've had a reply? Why not consider going to your GP tomorrow and asking them to do a test? And also asking them for advice as whether to take the mtx or not?

Adele just a thought. Have you been having hot flushes or other symptoms like that ? Were your periods regular before MTX ? They can do a blood test to check your hormones. Just mentioning this as my little sis had similar when she was 38 and she was starting the menopause. I started mine at about age 42. So I suppose we were quite young. Don't want to alarm or anything but worth a thought ?

Thanks for your replys, i've always marked in my diary my periods and they have been as regular as clock work every 25-29 days up and till the begining of april then nothing, i started taking MTX on the 27th of april, which is around when my period should have been due, so now i have missed 2 periods, i'm going to go straight to my gp in the morning and not take my MTX until i know for sure.

Hi Adele. A lady on another forum i'm on who is also on mtx hasn't had a period since starting it either. I have bad PCOS and haven't had periods for 7 1/2yrs. I take a pill 3 times a day for a week every 3months just so I bleed to avoid womb lining building up. Since being on mtx these induced bleeds have varied a great deal. If mtx has stopped your periods, maybe would be a good idea to take something like me to avoid lining build up. Go well X

Hi Guys, i went to my gp, who sent of a water sample which confirmed i was'nt pregnant...phew, still had no period and have continued with MTX, i spoke to my rheumy nurse the other day and she has said there is no way MTX would stop my periods and has adviced me to go back to my gp and to get him to investigate why they have stopped i.e could it be the change, although not had any hot flushes yet,my stomach is really bloated.... anyway i'm of on holiday for 2 weeks tomorrow so i'm going to stop stressing about it and go back and see gp when i get back.

hi Adele, glad you got the result you wanted. You can have blood tests to see what your hormones are doing and that will tell them a lot. Hope you have a great break away from it all.
