Subject: pregnancy update

I guys. Thought you might like to have some good news as everyone seems to have been having a super crappy time at the moment. I have added a link below of my 12 week baby scan. My PA is really bad still, the pregnancy hormones don't seem to be helping me but are instead looking after baby who seems to be doing well. I went for the scan yesterday and they dated me at 12weeks + 3 days which means baby is due on 19th October 2010. Baby's hand is up near it's face and it gave us a little wave!!!

We had the first scan at 5 weeks and 6 days.
My wife is missing her morning latte and other things but there's been no sickness or dizzy spells so far.
I've already bought loads of things.. i know its early but its very exciting.

Hi everybody - just wanted to let you all know that I've felt the baby move today and it was amazing :)

Also went to see my rheumy today but was in such a good mood with a massive grin I had to tell him not to be fooled and that my joints have been really bad and I'm in a lot of discomfort. He had a look at my ludicrously swollen ankle, knee and wrists and decided he's going to fill them full of steroids on friday!!! I know it's going to help but I've had my wrists injected before and it aint a pleasant experience :s

My rheumy really would love to be able to put me back on enbrel as, in his opinion, there should be no risk during pregnancy but, as there is no research on the matter he cannot ethically let me go ahead!!! It is so frustrating but if anything happened I would never forgive myself.

Hope you are all feeling well! Paul, how's your wife getting along? When is the due date?

loulou oh that's a lovely feeling when you feel the baby move !! Know what you mean about the Steroid inj I've had them in my ankle and hip. I had a course of injections for piles when I was unaware that I was pregnant with my 3rd baby and I did nothing but worry that he would be affected despite the doc telling me not to worry - he was fine - weighed 9lb3oz !! and was delivered bang on the date I was given !!

You are doing everything you can for the sake of your baby - and think - at the end of it you will have a beautiful little baby - all the pain and discomfort will melt away once you look at them for the 1st time !!

hey everyone - had my 20 week scan on Friday - all is well and we're having a boy. we're going to name him Oscar William!

I will pop a link to the picture soon but haven't got around to scanning it in yet.

I'm going to see the ante-natal consultant in a couple of weeks to discuss the effect my PA will have on labour - they seem to be a bit obsessed that I've had both hips replaced but the orthopaedic surgeon and rheumy have both catagorically told me that it won't cause any difficulty.

He has not sat still for more than an hour for the last 3 weeks so I can feel him all the time which is so nice.

And my PA seems to not be giving me so much hassle at the moment although my ankle is playing up still - the hormones seem to be looking after me as well as my little boy now :)

I'll keep you update.

Hey everyone - time for an update as I'm now 24 weeks out of 40 and my little boy is now classed as viable (so has a oe in four chance of survival if born now).

PA has impoved slightly but been having trouble with my ankle over the last few weeks. Finally got a steroid injection today and enjoying the temporary relief the local anaesthetic has given e and looking forward to the steroid kicking in. Oscar's been a wriggly little so and so which feels amazing until he kicks me in the bladder at stupid o' clock in the morning lol.

Saw specialist about how I'll cope duing labour - he was going to suggest an elective c-section (esp 'cos both my hips have been replaced) but once he met me and realised how well I knew my limitations he was happy for me to try for a natural birth - we are reviewing at 36 weeks and making sure my birt plan says in big red letters that no-one is allowed to touch my legs - last thing I want is my legs been forced into an awkward position and me dislocating my hips. Also going to try to get the birthing pool.

It's all dead exciting and it's nice to get to the point where i can start planning the birth. It's so much nicer that my joints have improved a bit as well!

I'll keep you all updated.

Yay - I am glad all's going well Paul.

Your poor wife, being so massive already - the heat must really be getting to her. I lost a stone in weight through illness in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy and am carrying my baby in a tidy little bump all at the front so, even though I'm 24 weeks, am still not too big but the heat is nearly killing me... lot's of lovely ice lollies are helping though.

I am definitely feeling the benefits of the pregnancy hormones now re arthur, which is particularly helping with the tiredness that practically wiped me out for the first trimester.

Next milestone is 27 weeks for the third trimester when we've decided we'll have to start buying prams and cots and all the millions of other things that babys need - only 20 more days to go - whoop whoop!!!

All the best

Hi Davina,Firstly, congratulations on finding out you are pregnant. You sound like you are having lots of trouble at the moment you poor girl but hang in there. Im not sure what, if anything, you would be able to take for pain at the moment with you just being pregnant, but maybe if you have a chat to your Rheumy and see what can be done for you. Re the prednisone, as far as I am aware it can be taken throughout pregnancy, but please dont just go with this as I could be wrong. As for the hernia, maybe if you apply a warm pack to your back and front it may give you a little relief till you can see your Doctor. I would suggest you phone your Rheumy and tell them your problem then push them to give you and earlier appointment. My thoughts are with you and dont you worry about having a grumble, goodness you are entitled to, your hormones and emotions will be all over the place at the moment. Hang in there and know there is a lot of support out there for you. Go well Hugs toyou. X

Congratulations on your pregnancy Davina

I can't help much re the hernia but I'm 6 months gone now and have psoriatic arthritis. I had a hellish first 3 months as all I could take was paracetamol and have steroid injections (in my bum and into the joint). My rheumy had put me on sulphazalazine but unfortunately it doesn't work for me so I stopped them.

I also was struggling emotionally to begin with as I was torn between wanting to be well but also not wanting to harm my baby. I spent evenings and weekends in bed just so that I could make it to work and I had to let my amazing boyfriend take the most fabulous care of me.

I'm now feeling much better and those 1st 3 months seem like a life time away (so much so that I've now decided that if we wanted a 2nd child it would be worth those three months of hell)!

Keep in touch with your rheumy as much as you can, if not for treatment then for some support at least. Try to focus on the baby at the end of it (that gets easier when you have the scans and it all seems more real). I'm sure it will get better - the hormones will kick in eventually and take some of the pain away.

All the best
Lou

hey davina, no worries!

It is really nice to finally be enjoying the pregnancy.

Although a spanner has just hit the works - I found a lump on my breast and had to have a scan - turns out there's a cyst but there's also a solid mass there too. Have had to have a biopsy and don't find out the results until Wednesday. There's also a lymph node that doesn't look quite right either. I've been on anti tnf since I was only 21 and one of the rarer side effects of starting it so young is an increased risk of tumors! I was always aware of the increased risk but never worried about it until now. Don't think I've ever been so frightened in all of my life! Certainly putting all of the early pregnancy problems with my PA into perspective.

I'm trying to think positively though as there is a really good chance it's benign. If not though, being pregnant is going to pose a major problem. I'm just grateful I'm so far along in the pregnancy now. I'll let you know how it goes next week - keep your fingers crossed.

Well, I've been knocked completely sidewards - the biopsy results came back and I have breast cancer. The PA is flared up (prob because of the stress) and I'm having to have two rounds of chemo before a caesarian section at 33-34 weeks pregnant!

Hasn't life dealt me the most shitty hand?

Thankfully, I'm a super positive person and am ready to fight this head on. I have a wonderful support network and have a baby to keep me focused.

I've caught it very early and my prognosis is excellent.

Baby Oscar has been letting me know he's doing ok by doing somersaults in my tummy - he has currently squished himself up onto one side of my tummy so that it looks really mis-shapen and has a foot wedged under my rib - I think I may have trouble with him when he's born lol.

thought it was time for another update - the hair has gone!!! So relieved that it only took two days to lose the lot. I thought I'd feel a bit weird about it but to be honest it doesn't seem that weird - I now have a delightful array of hats to wear which is quite good fun.

Baby Oscar keeps kicking away and letting me know he's doing well - only 3 weeks and 3 days until his birthday :-)

PA is crippling me at the mo - all of this damp weather is really getting into the joints. Ironically though I got my blue badge through the other day - still don't qualify for the arthritis but got it instead because of my breast cancer diagnosis!!! I should be able to claim dla once the baby is born though - decided not to apply yet as I can still walk a fair distance most days but once baby is born I am expected to not get on very well at all and the rheumy is going to struggle to find me meds that work with the chemo - 'tis all fun and games!!!

so exciting, only 6 days until my c-section. have been feeling pretty exhausted lately with being 34 weeks pregnant and only 2 weeks since last chemo but was given a double whammy of steroid injection yesterday. It is to help Oscar's lung development but the bonus is, despite the damp weather, i've woken up with a major spring in my step - yay. My joints aren't stiff and achey and I have so much more energy - I feel almost euphoric which is such a nice break to have a week before the chaos of being a mummy!!!

I'm having a 3 week break after having the baby too before recommencing chemo. I will keep you all posted when I begin to feel a smidgen more normal again although people keep telling me that, once you have a kiddy things are never normal ever again lol.

I'm so excited.

Hope you are all well.

Oscar is here :)

He arrived at 4.19pm on Thursday 16th September weighing an astonishing 5lb 7oz and as healthy as a full term baby.

He is amazing and I am feeling brilliant (except for achey elbows).

I will post a photo in a few days

Paul and Petra - congratulation on hitting 30 weeks, that was a really important mile stone for me during my pregnancy. If you are as half as happy as me and phil then you will be bursting; I always knew I would love been a mum but I never expected to feel so elated and so relaxed, it is so unbelievably wonderful!!!

Hi Lou, Many Congratulations to you and to Phil on the safe arrival of your precious baby boy. Welcome to the World Oscar. Well Done. I am so happy for you and to hear the good news. It really is so special being a Mum and you deserve to be really proud of yourselves. I am having trouble downloading the photos of you and your precious baby but will try to get them again.

I was so excited tonight when I opened up the Forum to read your news. I had been away to visit my daughter who is three weeks off having her first baby. She is getting so excited now and nervous at the same time and I cant wait to see my new precious grandchild.

Take care and love and hugs to you all. WELL DONE you certainly are an inspiration to us all. Rose. X

woo hoo - well done paul, am dead happy for you and the missus, well worth waiting for eh? You thought arthritis made you tired - arthritis + newborn baby is something else (and you don't give a monkies). It is actually a blessing that he is preterm as they sleep all day for the first couple of weeks so it eases you in gently lol... and they weigh less so you get stronger as they grow :-)
