Subject: Ostoporosis and OA

I'v OA hips, knees and hands just had spine diagnosed too but also have severe established osteoporosis - thought the two conditions didn't go together. The spines just been diagnosed with OA too. Any helpful suggestions welcome - taking anti-inflams and osteoporosis infusion yearly and exercising on ex bike and swimming - pain recently worsened in spine (had x-rays and awaiting CT scan. As I'v an early scoliosis I don't want this to worsen. Thanks for all your help.

hi goosebumps Welcome to this fab forum, lovely ppl in here etc, sorry to hear your rotten news.....Im replying to u at the mo, but others will prob know more about your situation, all that I know is, O.A. is wear and tear, nasty I know, and as painful as any other Arthritis, however, sadly u have said u also have established osteoporosis, you say u dont think that the two go together.....thing is Goosebumps is I dont think they r both connected, asd I said O.A. is so painful becos its wearing of the important joints, like your Osteoporosis in your spine, so different condtions, so I do beleive its poss to have both, im sure there are others out there tht have osteoporosis and have R.A.......I guess u r shocked taht u already have one rotten condition, and now been told other joints r affected due to wear and tear........just an example, I have Inflamatory artha, R.A.??(cos rhummys say i have R.A., another said I dont) I also have Reiters disease, and Tendon degeneration and Disc disease, so u see, ppl can have many conditons along with Osteoporosis....I dont think its that they go hand in hand, its just that u have been dealt a rotten card, like many of us in here.....altho we r a great forum, and lots of different type illnesses, we r all different, and I wld go and see your rhumatologist and get this all cleared up by an expert.......I was shocked being told over the years all the different conditions I have, yes some r related to the disease,.....hope I havnt confused u too much, but at end of the day, we can have a multitude of condtions that dont relate to our Main condition(if unlucky enough) but my Understanding of Osteoporosis is that its a condition in its own right, and unfortunately U also have O.A........hope ive made sense, and if I havnt, the gang in here will correct me......take care Jill

Hi Verity,
osteoporosis is low bone density and can cause fractures on minimal impact -I've had quite a few and the spinal OA was diagnosed when I had x-rays to rule out a spinal fracture (awaiting a CT scan now as not possible to rule this out completely). As osteoporosis is a thinning of bone and OA produces excessbone (osteophytes)it seems strange to have both within the same joint. I'v had many knee ops, steroids into hips and knees and am currently listed for a hand op- was goping to be listed for joint replacement but managed to get myself fitter by going to the gym 4 times a week so they're postponed - glad I've found this forum, thanks all for support!

Yeh, that does sound confusing. Youre own body is almost contradicting itself! Definately see your specialist like Jill said.

Keep us posted : )
