Subject: Sick of tuts and rolling eyes. . . I AM in pain!

Hi all i'll try not to ramble but have had enough. I live with my Mum so you'd think she'd understand my Arthur. If I ever mention it or wince etc she tuts and rolls her eyes. When the mtx pills weren't working she said don't see why you're in pain it should be gone now. Changed to mtx shots coz pills didn't work but even though I've been told it takes 6wks till i'll know If they're working and I've Only had 3 I really don't think she believes this flare and that my pain is bad enough for morphine. When put on 12hr morphine on friday I explained all about breakthrough pain and that's why I still need the Oramorph. Took some tonight and she tutted and said don't know why you need that you've done bugger all all day, yeah Only because I wasn't physically able Argh! If I ever try to talk to my sister about it she be littles it/me. Also I had to cancel an evening out last fri coz of this flare and it was Only my best friend who understood. Does anyone else get this. It has me doubting myself and feeling like i'm a hypochondriac.

My mum can be like that with me so i can understand how you feel. Has she been to any rummy appointments with you. If not try taking her in when you speak to him/her, perhaps ask about your meds and question how they work so she hears it all from a specialists mouth and has no excuse to belittle your pain.
Maby she is being flippant by tuttin as a way of waving off seeing you in pain by making it not a big deal, because really she hates seeing you in pain. Thats why mine is like that, its like if she doesnt acknowledge it then its not happening!
Im not living with her which makes things a bit worse as she never sees me on my bad days.

Not sure if that helps :). But just remember your not alone! Im 23, new on here and trying to get to know everyone, i have RA and am on mtx naproxen ect. What about you? X

Hi Abbie, I agree with the gang, particualarly the comment Kristine said......this forum always tells memebers to take the family or hubbys, wives, anyone that is showing the same view way your mum is. it will open her eyes, and u can ask the rhummy in front of your mum what the disease does to our bodies, and also what the meds do.....tc Jill

Hiya Abbie,

I think people dont see it could be so bad if you look young (I'm 30 and have had arthur since age 2)etc. I have had friends and work collegues that havnt understood and its not nice when people say things and dismiss the pain we are in.

I think the suggestions are great about your mum going with you as you can ask the consultant to explain your condition and the pain etc it causes.
You could also let your mum read the info for your medication so she realises that some medication makes you tired or can take time to take effect/have side effects.

Try sitting down and talking to her and explaining how you feel and what she could do to help. Maybe she just dosnt realise the extent to which its affecting you. You may put on a brave face.....I know I did.

Hope all go's well

Take care

Lucy

You're comments have all really helped me. Thank you! You're right Lucy I do put a brave face on most of the time which might be why my Mum doesn't think I need the morphine when believe me I do. Will defo take here to Rheumy next time If she can leave her work. If not, maybe i'll take my sister. Thanks again X

I know what you mean. Saw someone today who told me I was looking much better! And me in the middle of a flare. It's very tedious and I started to explain myself and then stopped. Couldn't be bothered, let them think what they want.

I think it is a case of wishful thinking sometimes, family and friends don't want to think you are ill so pretend to themselves you are not. I got very cross with my sister the other day as, when I told her I was worried about Dad's cough that he's had for ages, she just said 'oh! he's ok, he's been to the doctor and had tests and it's nothing.' Not true! None of it! She is such a liar! I told him go to the doctor (no, he hadn't been, hadn't had tests) and turns out he had a low grade chest infection that needed antibiotics! Easy peasy! What's the problem? When I told her about my diagnosis she just talked about how ill her husband was with arthritis - turns out he's got zero arthritis! No idea what that is all about but it drives me nuts. She just can't listen to a word I say.

You have my sympathy Abbie. Perhaps you should take them to your appointments as others have suggested. I told my sister to look it up on the web but bet she never has.

Apologies for rant :)

Hi Im new to the forum. When i was first diagnoised my mum would not let me sit down for to long as she said i may stiffen up and not be able to get around, i think it was her way of coping as it must be horrible to see a child no matter what age (i was 18) in pain. I remember once getting stuck in the bath calling for mum to help me get out, we decided to let the water out of the bath to help, believe me it didnt! we laugh about it now but we didnt at the time.
