Hi Suze, I know how youre feeling. Ive had to watch my 'best finger'! deteriorate these last few months. The end joint on my pointing finger is now fat and deformed and the tip now bends downwards. Thought I was gonna get to keep that one!
Try not to see 'mobility aids' as an aging thing. More of an accessory : ) You can get some funky walking sticks now. If its gonna make your life easier then try embrace it. Im 24 and havent been able to touch the floor for years but have only just accepted it and bought grabbers for the house. Although I cant abide the stigma attached they do help a massive amount and I can be a little more independent.

Try not to feel sad about it : ) youre not the only one and youre definately not a freak because of it! Just unlucky that it got to you earlier on in life.

Try keep your chin up and Im here for moaning if needed :-D

xx

Hi Suze

I was 20 when I started using my walking sticks (I had the moulded handle fisher sticks which are easier to use when your wrists don't bend much). I'm fortunate that I only needed them for a couple of years - I don't need them now, although have just found out I'm pregnant so have had to come off my meds and foresee a difficult eight months ahead of me where the sticks are going to make a reappearance.

It bothered me that I had to use a stick but not what other people thought. In fact, my friends were brilliant about it and used to "dress it up"!!! At Christmas it was covered in tinsel. When we used to go out to the pubs it became their pole for dancing and we used to poke cocktail brollies into the holes. I used to decorate it with really nice hair toggles (you know the ones with the flowers on them).

I found it helped to treat the stick as an accessory - much like specatacles, no-one likes wearing them, and they make you feel old, but you might as well chose the ones that look the best!!!

I hope you and your sticks become firm friends.

Hi Loulou, Congratulations on your pregnancy! So will you be on no meds at all? Or is there anything you can take?? Im 24 and want kids (whether my body will let me I dont know!) so have been looking into it and it all seems pretty terrifying coming off all meds.

Take care xx
