Subject: Waiting time...

After two weeks' wait, I've just received a letter from the NHS asking me to call a number to make an appointment... And it says in the letter that it takes 6-12 weeks for an appointment..

I haven't been able to walk since mid Jan and even using crutches, it's difficult.. My GPs pretty much gave me pain killers and wanted me to live with it.. I went online and bought a pair of crutches - when I had to choose the size, I felt very sad because I knew nothing about it so how can I choose?..

And worse -- I can't take NSAIDs... They give me asthma and stomach cramps and nausea...

I paid privately last week and the specialist says he is suspecting Reactive Arthritis... I am not financially well enough to pay any more private consultant who charges 200 quid each time..

I'm taking codeine but it makes my mood lower..

Is there anything I can do so that I can be seen earlier? Am I really going to suffer for another 6-12 weeks?....

Sorry for rants but I have been in a lot of pain for the past four weeks and I haven't been able to walk at all...

hi Paul, I had a similar experience last summer, I was house bound and in a huge amount of pain, couldn't take NSAID's etc. for weeks. I was told I needed an urgent rheumatology appt but they gave me one 8 weeks away. My GP's practice finally got it brought forward but had to wait 3 weeks. Several things you should do - make the appointment then call your gp and ask them to try and bring if forward for you, tell them you cannot cope. Secondly, once you have your appointment you can ring up for cancellations, do it as often as you can. Thirdly, ring social services and ask for an urgent OT home visit. Tell them you cannot walk. They can come and bring you all the stuff you need to manage at home. I didn't do this stupidly - I couldn't cook, clean, get off the loo, out of bed, out of a chair but I found out the other day they can bring you stuff to help with all this. And just keep putting pressure on your gp to get you that appointment. If you really feel you can't cope, take yourself off to A&E. When I finally got my appt the first thing they did was give me a steroid injection in the clinic (then they admitted me for 10 days!) Please don't sit there waiting in pain like I did.

Hello Sally,

Thanks for your reply. It's really really helpful.

My GP has referred me to the musculoskeletal department. I am hoping that it won't take another 12 weeks on top of this current 6-12 weeks to see a rheumatologist.

I have already had a steroid injection done in a local clinic but I can't pay any more to see that physician. (He suspects I have Reactive Arthritis)

Thank you again.

Best wishes,
Paul

Sorry Sally,

When you said to ring social service, is it my local council or Department for Work and Pensions?... I live in West Sussex..

Thanks..

Hi Paul,
The musculoskeletal department is good. They are the ones that look at you overall and decide whether you should see a physio or a consultant or have tests. They are the ones that got me my rheumotologist's appointment. When she examined me it was really clear I was in a bad state. You should get an appt fairly quickly as this is exactly what it is designed for - it is a kind of triage system. In theory, the urgently ill get sent to see a consultant/admitted etc.

It shouldn't take another 6-12 weeks on top of that. They should be able to make urgent appt. I was wrongly referred to a first time arthritis clinic. My GP put a rocket under them and I got my urgent appointment (3 weeks - the longest 3 weeks of my life!) When you get your appointment, if it is not in two or three weeks kick up a huge fuss. Tell them you cannot cope.

Re: Social Services. Ring your local Council Push very hard to get a telephone number if you council has a call centre as mine does. I had several goes. Some councils don't like you to speak to anyone unless you have a history with them, mine is like that (rubbish!)Ask fo Adult Social Services, emergency help needed. Someone should refer you to Occupational Therapy. Make sure you get the name and number of the person you speak to as my call was not logged and I waited a month to find out they hadn't done anything. If you get stuck, your local surgery might have a number.

When you're put through, say you've got inflammatory arthritis, you won't know if it is Reactive for ages, and tell them you are walking with crutches etc, tell them everything. They thought mine was inflammatory arthritis even though I knew it wasn't because I was so severely incapacitated - like yourself.

I don't think they can say straight away what sort of arthritis untless you test positive for RF (rheumatoid factor.) Everything else takes a while. I don't how badly you are coping at home or whether you live with anyone but there is a lot they can do. My mother's local council had an emergency service that was triggered by the GP and they would come in and offer various forms of help for up to six weeks. They are all different.

Hope you get some dates tomorrow. Let me know how you get on and I'll help in any way I can. My experience last year was so bad I'm determined no-one else should suffer like I did.
