I have had arthritis since the age of 13 am now 43. I am and have been on methotrexate for a number of years. Your GP should have been able to give you the informationyou required and your specialist definately will. You must express your concerns especially as your daughter is so young. I have experienced no side effects but the one you have to question because of her age is how it will affect her young liver. She should have had a secial blood test prior to treatment which checks the liver function at present and she will have regular blood tests once treatment has started. I have found it to be very effective and would say to you that if her illness is progressing she needs to go on drugs to halt the illness and this is what methotrexate is very good at. Good luck. Obviously over the years I have tried many drugs so if you need any further info e-mail me

Hello, my daughter has just started Methatrexate by injection this very week and she was so anxious, as we had been putting it off for awhile now and we decided that she would go on it as soon as she returned from her school trip in France, as it can alter the bloods etc and we did not want her going through problems just before the trip with school, as she was going along nicely on other medication and steroid injections, but unfortunately, as the consultant said it will get worse and already she has had an operation on her jaw (originally no one took no notice of the pain but the new consultant is brilliant and immediately referred for MRI which revealed the destruction of jaw bone, so we are really grateful that the doctor picked up on this) Like you we are anxious, worried that her bloods may be effected, as she also has a problem with her platelets and the last year they have been normal (touch wood) but understand methotrexate can deplete the platelets, so next week we have a blood test and then the dose of Meth. What made up our mind was when she returned from France after a week long of activities (even I could not cope with) she arrived here okay and the weekend, she could hardly walk and we had to carry her about. So that was when we were convinced that we would have to give it a go. Initially, she was scared and she would not let the nurse give the injection, but eventually with the help of another lovely nurse, she was injected and alas she said it did not hurt one bit and she said afterwards she felt silly for crying but she is to learn how to give it herself to enable her to have some control over it.

My daughter is 11 and we have suffered from years of pain with joints etc (again originally we was told it was growing pains, but it was only being admitted with severe joint pains etc that she was finally diagnosed. and we just do not want her to get these bad pains so here we are are the first week. She did write some questions down for the nurse like: Will the medication make me put on weight. All sorts of questions.

Anyway I hope you come to some answer as like you we were very scared, especially as the medications that she has been on has caused side effects (weight gain, mollescum etc)
