Subject: Anyone Else Have Anemia With Arthritis ?

Just been told I might have Anemia. Went for my 3 month Diabetes check and the Nurse flagged it up. Had another full blood count test so I have to ring them up next week. Just wondered if this is normal with Arthritis ?

Thanx Guys. No Jill I'm not on any meds for arther at the mo because they are still diagnosing which kind I've got. Go back later this month when they said they would put me on Hydroxychloroquine if it's inflammatory arther. I think they chose this because I'm diabetic and its not a steroid?

Yes I've got anaemia the GP receptionist told me to stop taking the Diclofenac. I said I've not taken them since last month when the Rhumie gave me a steroid injection. So further advice from the GP is to increase the Lansoprazole meds which are for gall stones !! confused ???? well I am as well.

I have RA and my blood shows aneamia on every test but like Julie, I dont need any medication for it.
I take Lansoprazile as well, I thought that was to put a protective layer on my stomach to prevent damage from the painkillers and anti-inflamatories.
Mind on saying that I haven't taken either for months now, but the gp said to carry on taking them.
I am confused now to???? lol

Thanks Angela - I'm going to try to solve tomorrow when I can actually talk to the GP. Instructions might have got mixed up through the receptionist !! It wouldn't be so bad but I feel as weak as a kitten and soooo tired all the time.

Hi KayJay, sorry to hear about the anaemia maybe they will put you on iron tablets? I am just wondering why you have to increase the Lansoprazole? I heve taken them for 3 years, they are to protect my stomach cos i take asprin and other meds. Hope you get it sorted take care.xxxx

Hi all thanx for your help :0) Just come back from the GP's and the reason for the increase of Lansoprazole is because the type of blood test result I had shown that my red blood cells are small which inidicates that there may be an internal bleed in my abdomen. So the increase is to try to stop this. However if the next blood test in 2 months shows no improvements I will have to have further tests.

The GP said it can be brought on by anti inflammatories [ I was on Diclofenac slow release capsules ].

I have also read somewhere that the meds taken for RA can cause anaemia. But as I'm not on any of these meds [ still under investigation for inflammatory arther ] it can't be that. But I thought I would just let others know about this.

AH well that explains it.
My gp thought I had a little bleed at one time in my stomach, and he sent me for a colonoscopy and an edoscopy and it turned out I had gastritis and a bit of diverticulitis, but no bleed.
If there is one KayJay they have a very good antibiotic that heals it, my hubby had them when he had an ulcer.
It sounds like your gp has it all in check. The only little thing I would want though is a check after one month not two, but there you go I am a big worrier lol.
Take Care

Finally got the Iron supplements from the GP today. I've been feeling absolutely terrible. Managed to do some shopping yesterday but the girls at the cafe were all saying how ill I looked. Pale, tired out, wobbly legs etc. It's difficult to pin point the reason as I'm Diabetic as well. Hoping the Iron will work - GP also said I might be at more risk of infections with RA meds ? Not heard of that before. Anyone else know please ??

She also said I will have to have a full blood count in 6 weeks and if the Ferritin is still low I'll have to have further stomach investigations. Noooooooo !!

Hey KayJay,

the arthritits meds decrease your immune system, so you'll be prone to colds, abscesses, infections, ulcers, all the horrible little things like that.

Good news about the iron! Im permanently on the stuff coz its the only thing that keeps me awake! lol Again, its the meds and the disease that bring it down isn't it?

Hope youre well : )

Thanx Verity actually I feel crap !! [ but thanx for asking ]. I've seriously thought about coming off the meds even though I've only been on it for a few weeks. Is this really what you feel like when you are on them long term ??? Because if it is I'll give them up and just accept the pain/stiffnes/swollen joints. Diabetes also makes you prone to all the infections you mention as well. Maybe just the way I'm feeling right now and probably talking out of my bottom but I hope the Iron will perk me up but I'm a bit down in the dumps at the mo.

You okay Verity ?

I've been on iron tablets before and they do help. I think i need some now, as i'm shattered :-(
Keep on the medication its worth it in the long run as a cold etc is better than losing mobility to a joint.

Hey KayJay, if you give up you wont have the side effects but like Paul says, the arthritis has full reign on your joints and can be as aggresive as it likes. I refused to take them all through my teens, coping just on anti inflams but am paying for it now coz Im having to have me hips replaced and I have deformities and very limited movement in all joints.
Maybe if you found an alternative that could help slow down the disease that could be good, but im not so sure about being on nothing : )

I usually feel dreadful, sick etc for a couple of days after taking MTX but this last week I was ok! I havd a bit of an achey cold but none of the sickness! Maybe you can get more used to it?!?!?

Take care xx

I can be a bit of a party pooper at times but it's because [1] I ache and feel stiff nearly all over and I just want to be in bed and [2] I can't drink bcos of Diabetes while everyone else is getting merry and silly I'm sat there like Mary Whitehouse [lol] and [3] yes the Diabetes can make you very tired as well and for some strange reason very angry [ think it's when we start to hypo when blood sugar crashes to a low ]. I'm actually dreading the daughters wedding in June [ I feel awful just thinking that ] - if I feel the same as now anyway. Like U say 1 day at a time Jill xx

Hi KayJay,

I know about not being able to drink some alcohol as with MTX your're not supposed to either as it causes even more damage to you liver.
Since i've been on MTX i haven't touched a drop and how i miss it too, especially when all those around you are have a few sherbets.

regards

Paul
