Subject: The foot person

Hi all, Im being referred to an orthotic dr (or something like that. Something to do with feet anyway!) She said that like diabetes ppl with RA need their feet checked up on a lot. Has anyone else heard this or does anyone see one of these drs? I have no idea what to expect lol

Hi Jill, yeh Im actually feeling pretty good toady. Ive had about 3 weeks of feeling constantly shitty, sore, stiff, swollen etc and I woke up this morning and have a lot less pain! I was thinking maybe it was just a long flare up (my flare up befor MTX were once a week for about 4-5 days) so its a bit of a change for me. But hey, Im feeling OK now so not complaining.
With regards to my feet, all my toes (apart from the big ones) are all bent and boney like my hands and after Physio today have realised that I get an awful lot of pain in my feet. Becasue I get pain all over I never really focus on where its coming from, just that I hurt. Also, apparently, Im not straightening my knees properly when I stand and this could be due to the pain in my feet. Ive not had xrays or anything so not sure about internal damage. I suppose, this person Im being referred too will make my feet as comfy as poss so it doesn't affect my posture so much. its a bit disconcerting when someone tells you that youre standing all wrong and I never even realised. In my head Im standing the same as everyone else!

Had some good news tho! I got DLA! So Ive been able to buy lots of gadgets and some new good quality supportive shoes. I now have a grabber upstairs and downstairs (sorry that sounds a bit like a euphemism) lol I got one of those jar opening things but it just seems to slip around the lid. Will have to look into this lol

Glad youre feeling a bit better Jill, it must have been so miserable, not being able to talk on here must have been a bit shit too.

xx

Hi Verity. I've been to a " Foot Fellow " !! [ yes that's right - Foot Fellow ] . Apparently it's a branch off Orthopedics. This guy then referred me to an Orthotics department. Orthotics deals with inserts for shoes etc. I've got an Orthotic boot from them and it's great because it keeps my ankle stable when walking.

Hi Jill, Somehow I was first time lucky with DLA and got higher rate care AND mobility for an indefinite period! I still cant believe it! I suppose my xrays and stuff at the hospital dont lie. Going to Tunisia on 28th feb for a week to try and get away from this icey cold weather. CAnt wait!
Hi KayJay, ahhhh I thought it might be something to do with that. How is the boot working for you? Have you bonded with it?? I have trouble bonding with stuff like that. Only just given in to a grabber and havent been able to touch the floor for years lol.

Verity the boot is a god send as it makes my ankle stable so not in as much pain as it was without it. They originally gave me Orthotic inserts [ in both shoes ] to " balance " my hips but they just made my hips hurt more. So it was trial and error 1st time round. But the boot is just a part of my wardrobe now and you can't see it under trousers [ which isn't a problem for me as I wear these all the time ] and you put your footwear over the boot so it's all good. Hope they can sort something out for you as well ;0)

I just had a look and they look much nicer than I imagined lol. Although I think my imagination went a bit wild because as far as I know both my legs are the same length lol
I just got some new shoes (proper outdoor walking trainers with loads of support for the feet. I cant believe how different my posture is already! Its hurting my back a bit but I see it as a good pain lol and hopefully it'll wear off. The only downside is theyre lace ups and I cant reach them so have to rely on my wonderful bf yet again : ) Bless him hehe

Karen I look at it like this. These are supposed to help you but if they are making more pain then there not ? If it were me I would get back to the Orthotics or the person who prescribed them and let them know they are making more pain.

I've been to an orthotist before. For some reason I ended up with achilles tendonitis in both legs (probably from walking funny due to pain) and now I wear heel risers in my shoes. It is amazing what a half inch of rubber can do!

Ive just bought some Merrell walking shoes because I thought id try extra support and see if it makes a difference. The heel is slightly raised and cushioned. Oh what a difference it makes! Ive always worn Etnies or similar skate trainers and compared to my new ones, theyre like walking on cardboard. Maybe the orthotist man will give me heel risers for my other shoes??
