Subject: Can Arthritis Make Your Eyes Hurt Please ?

Just wondered if anyone knows if Arhtur can affect the eyes? Woke up this morning and my eyes hurt like they were bulging out of my head [ a bit like that Arnie Swartz film Total Recall lol ] I had to shut them until the feeling went. Anyone else have/had this ?

Hi Kayjay
I know arthritis can make your eyes dry, sore, itchy. I use viscotears which i get from my gp, but you can buy over the counter drops. My eyes hurt me at times, as if they are going to burn at the back of the eyeball and really ache. I get pain also at the back of my eyes and at the sides of my forehead. Horrible i know, but other than the drops i dont know what else there is. The ironic part is they call it dry eyes but your eyes actually water.

Should you not goto the doctor if you eyes are hurting and you think it's a result of arthritis?

Hi All
Yes going to your docs is a good idea , but going to the opticans is better because they have the equipment to see behind the eye. The nerves and other things, if deemed necessary they will send you to hospital for furthur obs. Also Kayjay the opticians can do your glaucoma test if you are diabetic.

Thanx all for advice. Went to the opticians and they did all sorts of tests. She said my eyes look fine but I could do with using false tears. Also said it could be a result of having the systemic Steroid Injection last month at the Rhuematologists.

Hi when I was younger I had sjogrens syndrome in my eyes and that was linked to arthritis. I think its swelling behind the eye or something. I used to go to hosp for eye outpatients but nothing ever came of it and I grew out of it. It made my eyes really dry and itchy. Anyone else heard of this?

Yes Verity I think I've read it can come on with RA ? Some people have a very dry mouth as well. Went to see the Neuro today on my Rhumies instructions. More blood tests and a possible further nerve conduction tests [ had 2 already ] . Mentioned the eye problem but he didn't seem to make much of that.

Hi Verity I had to go to the Neuro's because I have wasted muscles on my left leg. I've had all manner of tests but 1st time I've seen a Neuro for it. He said it could be myopathy and did a blood test [ CPK ] I think ? which shows muscle damage showing up in the blood.Didn't seem interested in my eye problem though, or anything else for that matter. I don't know if it's just me but Neurologists always seem to be a bit on the arrogant side? Anyone else experienced this please ??

hi gang, i get eye pain a lot, its like stabbing pain in the eyes, and it always Lurks there, cant seem to shift it, but I know what it is, mine is due to Iritis, inflamation of the Iris, very serious condition if goes un treated, leads to glucoma, so all I can say is, I wld deffo go see a Hospital eye doctor, they give steroid eye drops if they see any dodgy cells behind the eyes that shouldnt be there......also as far as im aware Iritis, Uvitis(same I Beleive) can happen if u have the dreaded Artha!!

Jill my Mum has suffered with Iritis since she was very young [ flare up's I think they call it ] . I believe it started when she had an op on her eye - the pupil of that eye is permanently dilated. She also now has by-lateral cataracts. I know how much pain she has been in during the flare up's and the importance of getting the correct immediate diagnosis/treatment. To my knowledge she has not had inflammatory arthur but she has cervical spondy-something? I don't think I've got this as I remember the state Mum was in when she got a flare up, and I think the white of her eye went red. This has been a worry to us as she is in a nursing home now and can't speak or understand anything but I have told the staff that should her eye go red it is NOT Conjunctivitis but Iritis. You would be amazed at how many medical people do not understand this and sometimes never even heard of it !!

Hi Kayjay, u r so right, usually a red ring is around the Iris, by that stage its serious, and obviously if all the white is red, its urgent that she get sseen, but like u say, some ppl think its just conjunctivitis...they Must take her to see an Opthalmologist at that stage, or get given steroid eye drops when redness appears, Must be so hard for your poor Mum and you, feel for U, dont know how u cope with the worry....glad u dont have it, at lest that is goood news...kayjay sorry to be ignorant, i cant go thru all the posts, wld make me dizzy, but how bad is your R.A., meds etc? by the way, it great to see that u still come in and enjoy the forum, we need lots ppl like u, really makes a difference when new peeps come back and support the forum and others....take care x

Thanks Jill !! Yeah years ago they told Mum not to mess about with A+E just to go straight to the eye emergency clinic. Fingers crossed she's not had a flare up for quite a long time.

My arthur story is I started with low back/hip pain went to the Chiro about 10 yrs ago and he said it was Osteo of the spine. I was actually walking with a stick on New years Eve 2000!! because my knee swelled up so much.

Fast forward to 3 yrs ago when I noticed a boney growth sticking out near my ankle. Went to Ortho and he said I've got Osteo in my ankle and the bony growth was from a fall I had years ago when the A+E said it was just a sprain but in fact it was a small fracture so the bone had grown back larger than usual.

I have to wear an Orthotic boot [ very sxy NOT !! ] and walk with a stick all the time now because I can't bend my ankle. The GP told me I had Fibromyaglia and sent me to the Rhumies. I've been going there for 18 months now and still no diagnosis from them. My RF and ESR are high. Last time he gave me a systemic Steroid injection and said if all swelling and pain goes then it's Inflammatory Arther. If not - then it's not !!

Last week went to Neuro's because of weak leg muscle and he did a CPK blood test. That's about it and I go see the Rhumies again later this month. So I'm still no wiser as to what's up with me.

Thanx Jill the Rhumie says I'll go on Hydroxychloroquine if the Steroid injection works [ which it seems to have done]. Went to to see my GP today because I'm still getting high blood glucose readings due to the Steroid injection. She said that I would not probably be able to take any Steroid medication because I'm diabetic and Steroids make it high. So I'm a bit confused about that situation.
