Subject: Occuptional Therapy Support/Aids etc

Just a quick comment incase some members dont know about this and for any new members, hope this is useful.....everyone is entitled to ring their local council, and ask for the Occupational Therapy Dept, explain your condition(they ask anyway) they can offer u so many aids to help u within your house, doesnt matter if u own your own home, private renting, or council tenant(all free) they have a chat about your concerns, make an appointment to see u(everyone Ive ever met had been so kind and undersstanding) they take notes about your difficulties within the house, like needing Grab rails over the bath, to help with getting in and out, grab rails near in the shower, toiler raised seats, banisters, and help for getting in and out of bed, or settee etc....some of these items U can buy in shops, but Y pay when U can get them via Occ Therapy dept! not means tested..... i have had all the above fitted in my house, and i could not do without those grab rails etc...... in some cases, U can claim for a Grant(free again) for a complete shower wet room, ( certain criteria needed)....we r all entitled to this ok....Im a Proud person, ive been offered a carer to pop in and do my house work etc, but I declined, Y? becoz I wld clean the house b4 they came in to do it, that is Y lol..... but regard the equiptment, not too proud there lol..goood luck x

Hi Jill, like it when you are on your soapbox! I have had trouble turning the shower on when having a flare up. Also, tricky getting down the steps to my flat, especially when icy! I rang my local council and they were really friendly and helpful. I feel it's a bit soon for me to ask for help but I live on my own so there is no-one there to help during flare ups.

Hi Sally, if ya on ya own, the n U deserve it More.....they can put a rail outside and if the steps are really bad, even if u own it or rent it, they can sort out the steps if they are not in good order.....mention the shower, may just be a case of putting on a new type handle. go for it girl x
