Subject: Steroids and Diabetes

Hi guys. Just thought I would warn anyone on Steroids and have diabetes that it can send your blood glucose readings higher. I'm diabetic and on the diabetes forum I've just been told about this. Even the Rhumie didn't warn me yesterday when he did the Steroid injection.

Hi, Yes I found out recently too but think you have to be on them for a long time. Don't know what constitutes a long time though!

Well I tested my blood sugar before evening meal its usually around 5.0 but it was 10.2!! So it must be true and that's after just one Steroid injection [ into my system - not the kind you have in a joint ]. Shall have to ring my GP if it carries on like this. I did tell the Rhumie I was diabetic on my 1st visit and it should have been in my records ?

I misunderstood you. Sorry. I had heard that steroids can cause a 'steroid induced diabetes'. That's what I meant when saying about a long time. If you have it already I'm sure it is an entirely different matter.

Hiya KayJay, If I was you I would ring my GP straight away if I was worried, its not worth waiting and seeing that just causes more stress.

Thanks all :) Yes I had read about the steroid induced diabetes and I have just rang the NHS helpline and they have assured me that the high readings will pass. I just wish that the Rhumie had advised me of this when I had it.
