Hi Kevin everyones different and has varying amounts of pain. Keep working and mobile for as long as you feel you can! How old are you and how long have you already suffered? I suppose it depends on the state your joints are in already? Take care x

From what I have read there are so many different types of arthritis some are very managable with very little or no medical intervention, and people do go on for years working and managing fine, others need more help to manage their lives and some suffer awful.
I think when you get a diagnosis (unless you already have one and I have missed your post)you will be able to find out more about your condition then, and deal with it accordingly.
I was never off the computor when I was diagnosed and now feel like I understand what is happening and that helps my state of mind.

Hi Kevin
Verity is right it varies from person to person, as you say some get the mild onset which although you have aches and pains you can still manage to work. But others seem to go down hill fast.
I've had RA for over twenty years, i'm still mobile can do most things given time although sadley I 'm not fit enough to work now.
It came to the stage where I was becoming unreliable due to having flare ups. Keep as mobile as you can but try not to overdo it, I would imagine that would be difficult being a builder though. Meds help they slow down the progression of the disease and slow down joint deterioration. What meds are you on. Im on an Anti TNF called enbrel. Been on most of the meds over the years but enbrel has worked the best for me so far. Good luck

its most bizzare i told the rhummy doc how bad ive been getting flare ups and pain he gave me this great injection and gave me iburafen tablets and thats it he told me my bloods were high in protien and sent me for x rays and said he would be in touch ,which is fine at the moment but i hope he puts me in the picture ,he also told me if the injection worked then it was highly likley i have r a .and thats it i have to wait all i know is if he saw how bad i get he would know straight away. its in later life that worries me as i have read lots of posts from all these poor people suffering and its not pleasent to have.

Hi Kevin. I think I'm roughly at the same point as you are. I got the Steroid shot yesterday. Is this what you had ? and my Rhumie said the same as yours only he said Inflammatory Arthritis and if this injection worked for me then it will prove that's the case. Got to now wait 6 weeks before I see him again. Very hard to understand huh?

hi, I had a similar experience to you Kay and Kevin about six months ago, except I was hospitalized because so many joints were affected. The steroid shot in my butt worked almost within hours for my legs but not my shoulder. It took another 3 months for the diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis. I have just started on Methotrexate to control the symptoms but it takes a while to work. It was very frightening at first as I was acutely ill (literaly couldn't move) and thought was going to be like that for rest of my life. Luckily not lol! Am a lot more stoical now and, even though I am in pain sometimes and my joints don't work particularly brilliantly, I manage to do quite a lot of what I used to do but just in a different way.

bsk - how long did it take for the steroid injection to have an overall effect ?. I'm finding that generally I don't feel as stiff as I did before it but my fingers still hurt [ but are not as swollen ].

hi Kay, It seemed very quick in the first instance. I arrived at the hospital hardly able to walk or get out of a chair. They gave me an injection and in a matter of hours it eased enough for me to get out of a chair. I was still very stiff and had pain from swollen knee and shoulder etc. I was in hosp for 10 days and was only walking round the ward and not walking that well two weeks after but it gradually got better. Have to say I began to get worse when the injection wore off (around 2 months) and oral steroids reduced, which is why I have recently started Methotrexate.

hi Kay again, have they put you on any oral steroids too? Can't remember if I read anywhere what condition you have got so may not be an appropriate question.

Hi S - no oral steroids he just said that if this injection worked then I have inflammatory arthritis. So I'm still in the " don't know " stage. The GP diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia about a year ago and have been going to the Rhuemis for well over a year now. But have got worse since then - have to walk with a stick and wear an orthotic boot because my ankle is more or less shot. The ortho surgeon said he would not operate until my condition has had a firm diagnosis. So I'm really confused at this point !!
